Galvanic Action (Gal•van•ic Ac•tion)

When two dissimilar metals are immersed in the same electrolytic solution and connected electrically, there is an interchange of atoms carrying an electric charge between them. The anode metal with the higher electrode potential corrodes, the cathode is protected. Thus magnesium will protect iron. Iron will protect copper.
