imhoff tank (im•hoff tank)

a tank for sewage clarification consisting of an upper or sedimentation chamber with sloping floor leading to slots through which the solids settle to the lower or sludge-digestion chamber. Named after its developer. Differs from septic tanks in that digestion takes place in a separate compartment from which settlement occurs.
